Born Cold-Blooded

Do you remember your biology teachers said mammals, including human, are warm-blooded, which means we can maintain fairly stable body temperatures despite the environmental conditions around us.

But, do you know that 2% human population in this world are actually cold-blooded? These humans are in a never-ending struggle to stay warm. We call them INTJ.

INTJ is one of Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). It stands for Introverted, Intuitive, Thinking, and Judging. INTJs are the “Mastermind” personality: intellectual, logical driven, and confident in their own abilities, but also sometimes cold and unsympathetic, with a tendency to prefer theory over reality. This cause others to perceive them as arrogant, since INTJs frequently lack the patience and communication skills to explain themselves.

JFK, Jane Austen, Jay-Z, Beethoven, Bruce Wayne, Tywin Lannister and Petyr Baelish (Littlefinger) even both Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriarty are INTJs.

I am an INTJ too. So, let me share some strategies for successful communication with cold-blooded human like me.

FIRST – HEARTLESS, SOCIALLY AWKWARD

INTJS are comfortable carrying out a conversation. Sometimes we’re mistakenly perceived as arrogant and formal, but actually sometimes we refrain from becoming quick acquaintances. We are seem somewhat closed and distant in communication, and we find it difficult to express our feelings.

So, if you know an INTJ out there, don’t ever talk about:

  • Love
  • Relationship
  • Sorrow
  • Lyric
  • Poetry.

SECOND – LOGIC DRIVEN

INTJs on the other hand come across as well thought out and straight to the point. We feel the best when we have figured something out, how the world is structured, then what can be changed in it, how to improve it.

So, instead of talking about feelings, you’ll easily engage INTJs in conversation by making some critical comment regarding the concepts we have deduced. Critical comments and feedbacks are like sugar for us, very addicting and boost our energy. In these situations, INTJs can quite often become wordy and very talkative like sugar rush.

THIRD – THE INFLUENCE

Despite our introversion attitude, when we have something, we find profoundly interesting, like an idea or project, our enthusiasm about it may become quite contagious and can spread to those around them.

Our forceful nature tends to make us influential. That’s why among these 2% population, it’s not surprising that many famous people are INTJs. I don’t have to share how influential Charles Darwin, Isaac Newton, Elon Musk, or Mark Zuckerberg, do I?

So once again, what conversation hinders successful communication for an INTJ? Feelings of the soul, poor logical flow, meaningless crowd.

What conversation helps successful communication? Ideas, strategic/conceptual nature of conversation, topic calls for finding unobvious solutions, hidden possibilities..

You see Jay-Z do write songs about ideas and critics: Niggas in Paris, Empire State of Mind, Run This Town, No Church in The Wild, Ain’t no Nigga. The only Jay-Z’s billboard-hit song that talk about feeling is..

“I’ve become so numb I can’t feel you there // I’ve become so tired so much more aware // I’m becoming this all I want to do / is be more like me and be less like you.”

So cold-blooded, innit?

Let me bring other influential INTJs that might ring a bell: Al Gore, Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton. They like talking about ideas. Climate change. Immigration reform with a path to citizenship. Donald Trump? Obviously, he doesn’t have that intuitive, let alone introversion attitude. I guess he’s an ESTP … like my husband.

However, INTJs are actually good listeners. We listen to understand, not to reply. Not because we understand the principal of communication, but simply cause we’re born cold-blooded.

This speech transcript is for Toastmaster Pathway Level 2 Project “Understanding Your Communication Style”.

Feedback by the evaluator for the content only:

Excelled at: The creativity is appreciated by the evaluator. My scores in each communication style are equal. Direct, Initiating, Supportive, Analytical, they are 3. The time given wouldn’t be enough for me to share all these 4 types would spend. That is why I changed it to MBTI style.

To challenge: Make 360 story with link back. If the closing could link back to the opening would be great.
